The Butterfly
By Jay Douglas

An exotic butterfly of richest hue
Floated down and settled on my outstretched hand.
She lingered for a few breathless heartbeats fanning her precious wings
And lifted me so very high.

Then she fluttered lightly away.

Was there ever a moment so completely beautiful but senselessly brief?

I remember it happened with a smile and a sigh,
And a hopeless wish for another try.
And fading feelings as time goes by.
