In Still Waters

In Still Waters
By E.V. Wyler

In still waters, the false logs slide,
closing in on the calm lakeside.
Beware! Bucolic bliss betrays
the unwitting wader who strays
where torpedoes of death reside!

Through the surface’s underside
the gleeful alligators glide
towards the innocent one who plays
in still waters.

A lone splash . . . The ripples subside . . .
A toddler, wrenched in death-roll’s ride,
descends into the darkened haze,
and his empty stroller conveys
the place where the little boy died . . .
in still waters.

  1. That was a very sad chain of events.

  2. E. V. "Beth" Wyler says:

Yes, it is heartbreaking. We were at Disney that week (celebrating my daughter’s college graduation) when we heard the horrible news on CNN. It was on our return flight, while thinking about the Graves’ flight home without Lane, that I started to compose In Still Waters.
