What Is Necessary

What is necessary is need.
We need the bread, the water,
the air we breathe, the hand
rubbing the back of the neck.
Call it love or solace
or just the assurance of another body
willing to touch our own.
But more than that
what is necessary is
necessity. Call it desire,
motivation, the certainty
there is something we lack,
something we can’t do without.
