Dannan
O’Brien is an artist and writer published in poetry, short fiction, and
educational nonfiction. She has poetry archived in Juice Online and was
a recent winner in the Flash Fiction 40
contest. Her entry appears in the anthology of the same name. She lives
and writes at the top of a hill in a tiny gold rush town in Northern
California. This vantage point gives her a star’s eye view of the
skies, all the better to inspire us with this celestial poem.
Defying Gravity

Earth cannot keep us.
Sail for the deepest sky
where galaxies collide
and spectra seduce the heavens.
Steer through the dark hole
where extinct creatures of the antiquities
rest their molecular shadows
and charge atoms, ions and the dust of stars.
Don’t look back. Nothing to see–
just the chroma of burning gases
in the clouds that rise
from the embers.
