Poet, why do you weep?

05.05.18 Posted in today's words by

Susan Davis Gabbay’s most recent poem to appear here was “To A Muse” (March 2018)

Poet, why do you weep?
     I weep for him who
     leaves his beloved and
     sings “Con te partiro”.

Poet, why do you weep?
I weep for the one who
     far away, pleads, “Country
     road, take me home”.

Poet, why do you weep?
     I weep with him who
     plays “Shenandoah”
     Soft, sweet sounds.

Poet, why do you weep?
     I weep to the mournful
     notes of “Amazing Grace”
     rising from harp and saw.

Poet, why do you weep?
I weep with those who wept
     by the rivers of Babylon
     in a strange land.

Poet, why do you weep?
     For long-ago sorrows
     these tears are shed
     from the well of forever.
